2007

• Rui Fang, a 2007 B.E. graduate from Department of Computer Science and Engineering, won the ACM SIGMOD 2007 Undergraduate Scholarship as one of the seven awardees selected worldwide.
  Rui has published a system demonstration paper at the ACM SIGMOD'07 conference, and a full research paper at the Data Management on New Hardware (DaMoN) Workshop 2007 in conjunction with SIGMOD07.

• Bingsheng He, a PhD candidate in the database group, won an IBM PhD Fellowship for the academic year of 2007-08.
  The IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Award is an annual, worldwide competitive program. It honors exceptional Ph.D. students in various areas of study such as computer science and engineering, electrical and mechanical engineering.

  2004

• HKUST people have two full research papers accepted by the SIGMOD 2004 conference.
  The two papers are "Efficient Processing of Twig Queries with OR-Predicates" by Haifeng Jiang, Hongjun Lu, and Wei Wang, and "Prediction and Indexing of Moving Objects with Unknown Motion Patterns" by Yufei Tao, Christos Faloutsos, Dimitris Papadias, and Bin Liu. Congratulations to the authors!

• HKUST people have five full research papers and one demo proposal accepted by the ICDE 2004 conference. Congratulations to the authors!

  2003

• Three research papers from our group are accepted at the SIGMOD 2003 conference, and three at the VLDB 2003 conference.

• Prof. Michael Franklin visits our department and database group for a month in February 2003.
  Franklin is an associate professor at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on the architecture and performance of distributed databases and information systems.

• HKUST hosts the IDEAS 2003 Conference.
  The conference will be held in Hong Kong July 16-18, 2003. Prof. Wilfred Ng is the Program Co-Chair and Local Organization Chair.

• Our recent PhD graduate, Dr. Yufei Tao, receives the Young Scientists Awards on Physical and Mathematical Science from the Hong Kong Institution of Science at the 10th Annual HKIS Conference held on Nov. 2, 2002.

  Yufei received his PhD degree in 2002 from HKUST under the supervision of Prof. Dimitris Papadias. He is currently pursuing a Postdoc at Carnegie Mellon University. Congratulations to Yufei!

• HKUST people have five research papers and two poster papers accepted at the ICDE 2003 conference held on March 5 - March 8, 2003 in Bangalore, India .
  Congratulations to the authors! For your information, there are totally 51 research papers and 31 posters accepted at this conference.

  2002

• HKUST hosts the VLDB 2002 conference held on August 20-23, 2002 in Hong Kong.
  Prof. Fred Lochovsky is the Conference Co-chair, Prof. Dimitris Papadias the Publicity and Publications Chair, and Prof. Dik Lee one of the Tutorial Program Chairs.

• Qiong Luo joins the Computer Science Department as an assistant professor in the Fall of 2002.
  Qiong received her Ph.D. in Computer Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA in May 2002. Her dissertation research was on Caching for Web-based Database Applications.
